…but I’ve been all but holed up at home with a severe case of the Ohio Valley Crud all weekend and ain’t feeling too chatty.

Anyway… 2010 had its ups and downs, 2011 looks to be the same, assuming World War III and/or the Greater Depression don’t break out.

Speaking of which, if you’re not buying precious metals right now, you really need to start. Gold is up over 50% and silver almost 100% from a year ago (in U.S. dollars). Deflation isn’t coming — it’s already here.

Enough pontificating on my part. Go have some fun, and let’s hope I don’t drown on my own mucous.

With a heavy heart I’m sad to report that Type O Negative frontman, Peter Steele, has died.

I can’t claim to have liked Type O Negative since the beginning, as I never heard of them until I saw the video for Christian Woman on MTV (back when they actually played music). However, I’ve loved their work ever since.

I first saw Type O Negative live in the fall of 1997 on the October Rust tour at Annie’s Garage in Cincinnati, which is now unfortunately the parking lot for Cinergy Field. That was a great show, because Annie’s was a small little hole-in-the-wall, Type O Negative was just getting popular, and it was a weeknight, so I was able to stand a mere ten feet from the stage looking up at the 6’7″ man-mountain known as Peter Steele. For such a small club, the sound was great, and it was an awesome show.

I saw him again a few years later for the World Coming Down tour at Bogart’s, which despite being a bigger venue, had a lot shittier sound. (I guess that place was better suited to all the death metal shows I saw there.)

So good-bye, Peter. You will be missed. I guess as your song states, Everything Dies.

Happy New Year (2010 (or 99 for those of you who keep count ;)) !!! (Part II)

One of the great things about living in a Chinese country or Chinese-influenced country (like Thailand or Singapore or whatnot) is that you get TWO New Years each year. Tomorrow (Feb. 14, Valentines day) is the date on which the lunar New Year falls this year (it recesses with the lunar cycle, sort of, and its far more complicated than that…, if you want an explanation post a comment :P… I lecture 3 whole classes in my ethnoastronomy course on the precession of the equinoxes and synodic(moon-based) and sidereal(in our case Sun-based) years.). As such, I will be largely out of commission until the main event (New Year’s eve and New Year’s day) have passed.

Enter the Tiger!

This has been the year of the Ox… but Enter… the TIGER. In an ironic twist, last night my friend almost hit a cow on her way home… for those of you in the states (especially the western U.S.) that would not seem totally odd… but this is was in a crowded city…. in Taiwan… a country with few cows… she said two police men were running after it… sadly she did not get a photo… haha.

Anyway… I wish you all good fortunes in the coming New Year, both Solar AND Lunar.

For those of you not in the know, apparently MPM is in the hospital for something or another. My Mandarin is kind of rusty, but I think it involved a transvestite prostitute, a chicken, and a basket of kumquats.

At least, that’s what I understood. Maybe it was a transvestite chicken and a basket of prostitutes…

I guess we’ll let him explain more when he gets back.

In the meantime, some classic WTF…

Legendary Newsman, Walter Cronkite

We have truly lost a legend. Though many probably assumed he had died years ago, Walter Cronkite was still providing voice tallent even until quite recently. His passing is a tragic loss. Despite the recent losses of other greats in Music, Motion Pictures, and TV, Cronkite stands out for many reasons, one of which being that he was born before many of the recently departed and died after them!

He led a long and successful life, and will be missed.

Uncle Woody’s (or “Woody’s” as we affectionately called it) has closed its doors forever…. Buzzy (the Owner/Proprietor) must have finally retired….Here is a link to the news as I have read it.

The weather in Taipei (anywhere else if you enter a locale/zip)… also, its humid… air you can wear humid, Thrasher’s room in summer hot and humid… all the time…

Ahh… but all I have to do is find some Stinky tofu to soothe my nerves…

I can wash it down with some fine baiju Chinese liquor…

During my summer trip to Japan I will certainly enjoy some natto (though mine will certainly not be eaten on rice, thank you, mine will be between two “Mangetsu Pon” rice crackers [image unavailable]…) and washed down with some fantastic Otokoyama sake.
